impAct

Abstract

We present ImpAct, a novel force feedback stylus which enables 6-DoF interaction with touch screen display devices. Proposed stylus can dynamically change its effective length and equipped with sensors to calculate its angular position (yaw, pitch, roll) in world coordinates. When a user pushes it against a touch screen, physical stylus shrinks and a rendered projection of the stylus is drawn inside the screen giving the illusion that it submerged into the display device. ImpAct can be used to interact with touch screens using x, y transformation on surface, z transformation by pushing it on the screen and three angular transformations. According to its interactions with the displayed environment, haptic feedbacks were given to the user's hand. In this paper, we discuss possible interaction scenarios and prototype applications for ImpAct. Furthermore, results from our evaluation prove that the system can generate radial inputs with ±7.5mm average error rate and ±10o angular resolution at 91.7% success rate in roll angle control.
